I know “The Panic in Central Park” gets lauded as being one of the best episodes of “GIRLS” for how self-contained, loaded, intense, and perfect it is. But I’d like to submit “One Man’s Trash” as one of the best (if not my favorite) episode. It also unfolds in a sort of dreamlike state, with basically no core characters in it besides Hannah. Casting Patrick Wilson was a genius move, not only because he’s gorgeous, but because he is so surprisingly out of sync with Hannah, and yet, they just sort of go together. I love that we also get a peek into how the wealthy gentrifiers of 2013 Brooklyn live, taking a stroll through his gorgeous brownstone that is both pretty and also very, very sad and lonely. It’s a bit of an emotional roller coaster, and ends with such stellar continuity—Hannah taking out Joshua’s trash after dumping trash from the coffeeshop in his bins illegally for months.
Also, “One Man’s Trash” was directed by Richard Shepard! The same person who directed “The Panic in Central Park”—so clearly he’s a great director :)
